My name is Siew-Lian and I have been a speech and language therapist since I graduated from the University of Sydney in 2004. I am passionate about supporting young children with communication and feeding difficulties. Since coming to the UK in 2007 I have developed my passion working with babies and families with feeding and communication difficulties including supporting children with complex communication needs. I completed a Masters in Profound and Complex Learning Difficulties through Manchester University in 2012. I have also completed further qualifications in paediatric dysphagia (eating ,drinking and swallowing difficulties) and have since developed these two areas as specialisms in my career.
Early support is vital for building communication relationships and interactions as well as supporting feeding development. I aim to work with you and your family in your home to provide support and guidance as you develop your relationships with your infant or child and to help them reach their full potential.
I have experience working with children with with a range of communication needs such as children with:
- Language delay
- Developmental Delay
- Complex physical needs affecting communication development
- Children who require alternative and augmentative communication systems
- Autism Spectrum Conditions
I have over 10 years experience working with infants and families with feeding challenges due to a complex start in life such as: prematurity, gastrointestinal conditions such as reflux, cardiac conditions, structural conditions such as laryngeal cleft and infants & children with Down Syndrome and other congenital conditions.
I have experience in providing assessment and intervention for children with a range of feeding issues such as:
- Supporting infant and mother breastfeeding dyads
- Fussy feeding
- Tube weaning (to breast, bottle or solids)
- Delayed chewing skills
- Aversive feeding
I am passionate about teaching and education and have presented at national conferences and written articles looking at early feeding and communication difficulties.
I work with Stacey and the team at Feed Eat Speak alongside my NHS job, where I am a feeding and communication specialist at Homerton University Hospital Neonatal Unit and Hackney Ark. In my spare time I enjoy reading and cycling, and camping adventures with my family. I have been through the journey of breastfeeding, weaning and introducing solids with both my children. I know how stressful it can be to have a baby who is refusing solids when weaning, and how key it is to have support around you at this time.
As part of my job I am passionate about supporting mothers and infants on their breastfeeding journey on the NICU and following their discharge into the home. This experience, as well as breastfeeding my own two children has only cemented my passion to do everything I can to help build breastfeeding dyads between mothers and babies I am working with. I am currently training to be a lactation consultant and will sit the exam to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in April 2019.
